Protect Child Nutrition Programs

Save School Lunch imageThis week, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to consider the fiscal year 2015 Agriculture Appropriations bill (HR4800, Section 739), and the Senate is expected to consider a similar version in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, both bills contain provisions to weaken child nutrition programs, including a waiver to allow schools to opt out of all school meal nutrition standards.

Additionally, there are proposals to override science-based standards for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) program. We want Illinois’ women and children to have the best chance at a healthy life; crucial nutrition standards for these programs help make that possible.

Please join us in urging your Members of Congress to support science-based recommendations for school meals and the WIC program.

Congratulations to this year’s Loretta Lacey Award recipients: Peg Dublin and Dr. Melissa Gilliam; we thank them both for their outstanding accomplishments in the MCH field. A special thank you to our keynote speaker, Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck, Director of IDPH, and to all of EverThrive IL’s partners and supporters. If you haven’t joined our community yet, we encourage you to become a member today to sustain our work in fiscal year 2015.
