Illinois Coalition for School Health Centers |
1. What is YAC?
YAC is the Youth Advisory Council. We care about the health of our peers. It’s hard for young people to get good healthcare, that’s why we work hard to make positive change for school health centers. Students who get healthcare are more likely to stay healthy, stay in school, and be successful!
The AAP Adolescent Health Partnership Project awarded YAC with it’s “Promising Practice for Promoting Adolescents’ Strengths”. This award, initiated in 2010, recognizes those programs, groups, and individuals who have made an innovative contribution to the promotion of positive adolescent health messages, health care services, and practice management activities.
2. What does YAC do?
This year YAC focused on the tobacco industry. We participated in “Operation Storefront,” which helped us look at how big tobacco companies target teenagers. We learned a lot of facts about tobacco and have been passing this information on to our peers. We created peer to peer presentations and we have volunteered at events focused on healthy lifestyles. We were invited to do a radio interview about tobacco and even started a blog! (Read our first blog post at http://bit.ly/ssR8Jq).
We also do fun things like go to the Museum of Science and Industry and down to Springfield for our School Health Center Advocacy Day, where we get to educate lawmakers on the importance of school health centers for our success!
3. How do you feel about YAC being awarded the AAP Promising Practices Award for Promoting Adolescent Strengths?
It’s great because we know it’s good to talk about health and how it affects us.
4. Favorite Part of YAC?
We have a lot of really awesome memories from YAC. Some of our favorites are when we went to the “Beyond Media Health Summit” and presented our information to so many people. We also really like recruiting new people to join YAC. Meeting new people from different schools is interesting and makes YAC really fun.
