School Health Centers and Health Care Reform

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148) includes two important provisions for school-based health centers (SBHCs): language authorizing a federal SBHC grant program (Sec. 4101(b)), and an emergency appropriation that would provide $200 million for SBHCs over four years (Sec. 4101(a)). The first round of the emergency appropriation RFP was issued for capital, construction, and renovation costs in the summer of 2011. 17 agencies in Illinois received awards totaling $4.5 million.  Click here to read the press release. For more information on federal advocacy, please visit www.nasbhc.org/advocacy.

The second round, totaling $5 million was issued this fall and Illinois again benefited -  the East Side Health District received a grant to fund a mobile unit.
