The graduation cycle is such a big transition for so many young adults, and here at IMCHC we are in the midst of our own graduation. As we search for a new Executive Director I turn to the backbone of our organization, our chapters.
Our downstate chapter meets quarterly in Mount Vernon to discuss IMCHC’s policy agenda and issues unique to the southern portions of Illinois. I’ve always recognized that maternal and infant care looks different across the state, and something that’s simple in Chicago could be a challenge to a mother in Belleville.
IMCHC policy must be shaped from a statewide perspective, and our chapters are integral to this process. Our next downstate chapter meeting will be on July 28th and I hope to see all of our partners in the southern part of the state there!
|
Also, IMCHC’s Junior Board has been hard at work planning their Second Annual Summer Celebration. Please support all of their efforts by attending or purchasing door prize tickets. This is the first year the Junior Board has decided to award a member with the Advocate of the Year Award, and I am so proud of this year’s recipient, Ms. Julia Fedor.
I hope to see all of you at the Junior Board’s event or one of IMCHC’s future chapter meetings! And, as always, please consider becoming a member and supporting IMCHC’s work in the fight for maternal and infant health in Illinois.
Best regards,
Executive Director

In the Affordable Care Act there are many provisions relating to oral health, specifically the dental health of children. As a significant concern across the state of Illinois, oral health will see improvements with the new legislation, including the requirement that pediatric oral health coverage be included in most insurance plans by 2014. Further, the federal government will be spear heading an evidence-based public education campaign to promote oral health, with a focus on children. For more information about these provisions, or for IMCHC’s Policy Brief of Oral Health Provisions please visit our website. |

HB5859 allows for dentists who are not enrolled as Medicaid providers to volunteer at nonprofit clinics, including FQHCs and public health clinics, and for the sites to bill for eligible Medicaid services provided by these volunteer dentists. We expect that this legislation will lead to improved access to oral health services in underserved areas. |

The Illinois Coalition for School Health Centers' Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has completed its final project, a video entitled “Why Care About School Health Centers.”
|
YAC is an advocacy youth group that meets bi-monthly to improve the visibility of school health centers (SHCs) and the communities those centers serve. As part of their work this year, YAC focused on media and how SHCs can improve access to healthcare by utilizing diverse media outlets, including Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and YouTube.
