School Health Center Bill in US Congress – Take Action Today!

Contact your Congressman to encourage him/her to co-sponsor HR4230, the School-Based Health Clinic Establishment Act!
The School-Based Health Clinic Establishment Act (HR 4230) was introduced on November 15, 2007. Similar to the Senate bill, S600, it will authorize the first-ever federal grant program for school-based health centers. Congresswomen Hooley (D-OR) and Capito (R-WV) have taken the lead in sponsoring the bill with 16 original cosponsors, including Illinois Congressman Jan Schakowsky, sharing their support.

More co-sponsors are necessary to make sure this bill is considered and passed by the House. Please contact your local Congressman to urge him/her to cosponsor HR4230. Visit the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care’s “Take Action” center to send an email.

We also encourage you to contact your Congressman by phone; visit www.vote-smart.org to find DC phone numbers for your House Representative.

FamilyCare Expansion in Illinois

FamilyCare has been expanded to allow for more parents and caregiver relatives access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance. Parents in a family of four earning $80,000/year may now be eligible for coverage.

Like All Kids, FamilyCare covers doctor visits, dental care, specialty medical services, hospital care, emergency services, prescription drugs and more. Parents must be uninsured to qualify OR meet an exception like losing health care coverage as the result of a job loss.

Monthly premiums will depend on family income and will range from $15-$140/month per adult. Co-payments for health services will be $2-$5 for each visit or prescription.

For more information about FamilyCare visit www.familycareillinois.com or call 1-866-255-5437.

To learn more about how you can get involved with statewide outreach efforts for the FamilyCare expansion and other state health care programs, please contact Laura Leon at 312-491-8161x23 or lleon@ilmaternal.org.
