The Illinois Coalition for School Health Centers is collaborating this
year with the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health to host the annual
School Health Center Conference. The conference will promote a positive
approach to sexual health issues with the understanding that school
health centers offer one of the best environments for implementing
meaningful change.
Join the ICSHC for our SHC Advocacy Day on April 1st, 2009 in
Springfield! Students, providers, parents, teachers and SHC allies are
all invited to participate in an exciting day of taking action for
increased school health center funding. Advocates will participate in a
brief training, be able to speak directly with their legislators about
supporting school health centers, and for the first time ever, attend a
Adolescent and Children’s Health Rally in the Capitol Rotunda! The event
will be hosted by the ICSHC’s very own Youth Advisory Council. You don’t
want to miss this very important and fun event! For more information or
to RSVP, please contact Megan Erskine at
merskine@ilmaternal.org by phone at 312-491-8161.
Please see the links
below for more information about how to RSVP. If you plan on bringing a
group of students, you MUST attend an Advocacy Day Leadership
Training on either February 20th or March 2nd. For
those not in the Chicago area, Megan will set up a phone training by
appointment.
On April 9, 2008 over
220 students, teachers, parents, providers, and ICSHC members and
partners from 17 different schools gathered in Springfield to voice
their support for school health centers. Nearly 190 students from across
the state participated an advocacy training, a rally, and a trip to the
Capitol to speak with their legislators about school health center
funding. Thank you to all who helped lead the day. Please view photos
from photographer Katie Stapely at here.
Interested in
attending School Health Center Advocacy Day with a group of students? Be
sure to get the information you need by attending a mandatory Advocacy
Day training. For those not in the Chicago-area, Advocacy Day trainings
will be incorporated into regional meetings. Other trainings can be
conducted by phone. The first Chicago training will follow the
Chicago-area regional meeting; the second training will take place on
March 2nd. More information will follow.

The ICSHC is once again holding its statewide student contest. Last
year, we delivered 36 keys and 1,500 stories to the Governor’s Chicago
office. This year, we will build upon last year’s success by involving
even more school health centers! Each school health center is being
asked to design three keys and collect 20 short essays that will be used
to reach out to our elected officials in the Illinois legislature.
School health centers will receive materials in November, and all keys
and essays should be returned to ICSHC by Friday, January 10th.
Prizes will be awarded to awarded to school health centers and
individual students. Click below for campaign materials:
Stay tuned for action items and activities to build awareness around
school health centers! This year’s Awareness month goals include each
school health center holding a site visit or meeting with a state
legislator, presenting the school health center Power Point, and
recruiting students and supporters for Advocacy Day.
